Piriformis syndrome is a painful condition involving the compression of the sciatic nerve due to tightness of the piriformis muscle.
The sciatic nerve (responsible for supplying sensory and motor function to the back of the thigh, leg and part of the foot) runs beneath, or in 15% of individuals, runs through the piriformis muscle which is located in the buttock region. When the piriformis muscle becomes tight and contracts, it can compress the sciatic nerve triggering symptoms. Pain, numbness and tingling can be felt in the buttock, back of the thigh and at times, in the calf and foot. Pain can be felt especially with activities such as prolonged standing, sitting or rising from a seated position. Furthermore, the affected muscles innervated by the sciatic nerve may also become weak which can affect other areas, including triggering low back pain.
Piriformis syndrome is most prevalent during pregnancy and those who drive for prolonged periods of time.
Massage therapy can help with piriformis syndrome by significantly reducing muscle tightness and pain, accelerating recovery and return to function.
