Aliya Juma is a Certified Canadian Counsellor with the Canadian Counselling Association and holds a Masters Degree in Counselling from the University of Ottawa.

Ms. Juma’s work is strongly based on Cognitive Behavior Therapy, reflecting the belief that each of us already posses within us the strength and wisdom to bring change and bring a balance to our lives.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a form of therapy based on modifying assumptions, beliefs and behaviors, with the aim of influencing negative emotions and thought processes. CBT has become widely used to treat various kinds of mental health concerns including depression and anxiety. The therapeutic techniques may vary depending on client preference or concerns. They commonly include keeping a diary of significant events and associated feelings, thoughts and behaviors; questioning and testing assumptions and beliefs that might be unhelpful and unrealistic; and trying out new ways of behaving and reacting. Relaxation and distraction techniques are also commonly included.

While studying at the University of Ottawa, Ms. Juma was placed as a counsellor within the Jewish Family Services of Ottawa. Her counselling duties included intake with potential clients, co-facilitating the weekly anger management group sessions, as well as individual counselling with a wide array of clientele. Ms. Juma was also placed at St. Nicholas Adult High School where she conducted career counselling, workshop facilitation and individual counselling with high-risk young adult population. Ms. Juma continues her education by participating in workshops and attending various seminars to enhance her counselling profession.

On her spare time, Ms. Juma enjoys yoga, reading and enjoying time with her family and friends. She also works part time, as a career counsellor, within a local community centre where she runs a weekly group session for at-risk youth.
