Clinical Exercise Physiology

A CSEP Certified Exercise Physiologist uses exercise to improve function and health as well as reduce risk of chronic diseases. The scope of practice is described by the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology.

We work with healthy individuals and those with medical conditions such as:

  • Musculoskeletal conditions (injuries, osteoporosis)
  • Arthritic conditions
  • Cardiovascular risk factors (elevated blood pressure, cholesterol, or body weight)
  • Neuromuscular conditions (post-stroke rehab, multiple sclerosis)
  • Metabolic conditions (diabetes, etc)
  • Frailty (osteoporosis, gait & balance disorders, age-related muscle loss and deconditioning)

The summary of our scope of practice is:

  • Providing exercise clearance for an individual wanting to engage in physical activity or exercise
  • Administration of fitness evaluations (aerobic fitness, muscular strength & endurance, flexibility, body composition)
  • Interpretation objective measures and medical history to safe and effective exercise programs
  • Advise which exercises to be avoided based on the objective measures and medical history
  • Prescription, demonstration and supervision of exercise for medical conditions, functional limitations, and disabilities
  • Suggest dietary practices for health related nutrition
  • Suggest dietary practices for sports-performance
  • Provide training programs for athletes
  • Act as a personal trainer
