What is the difference between Chiropodists and podiatrists?

The major difference between Chiropodists and Podiatrists is that a Podiatrist is US trained. (There are no Podiatry schools in Ontario.) Podiatrists can also own and operate x-rays as well as conduct bone surgery. Both chiropodists and podiatrists are regulated health care practitioner and practice under their college guidelines.

Does OHIP cover Chiropody treatment?

Unfortunately not, but most private Health Insurance will cover your chiropody visits and orthotics. A payment in full must be made initially and then proof of payment (receipt) must be sent to the insurance company along with health plan forms. At that point, the insurance company looks at the claim and provides reimbursement.

How do orthotics help?

Custom made foot orthotics help to control excessive motion in the feet, align the bones and help distribute the pressure over the whole base of the foot. Some motion is required in gait but excessive motion causes and increased the amount of stress and strain. By improving the alignment of the foot, there is less stress on the joints, muscles and ligaments and a “healthier” gait pattern will be achieved.
